Nidzica Castle is a late medieval Teutonic stronghold and one of the city's most important monuments. The first document concerning Neidenburg Castle dates from 1376, and its distinctive structure features, among other elements, two massive defensive towers on the eastern side. Today, the castle is still a vibrant place. Its walls house a regional museum, the Nidzica Cultural Centre, a library, a hotel and a restaurant. A tour allows you to explore the interiors, learn about the history of the ancient Prussians, the city and the castle, and see artefacts connected with Masurian culture. The tour ends in the former granary hall, which now serves as a viewing room and houses the Gallery under the Beam. From here, you can look out over Nidzica from above.
Why is it worth visiting?
It is one of the major historical attractions closest to Zacisze and a great way to add variety to a day spent in Masuria. The castle is not merely a monument to be viewed from the outside. During the tour, you pass through several completely different spaces—from historical exhibitions and the armoury to the Gothic Knights' Hall with its 15th-century polychrome paintings. Another advantage is its location practically in the centre of Nidzica, so you can combine your visit with lunch, coffee or a short walk around the city.
What will you find there?
The standard tour includes, among other things: the “History of the Nidzica Region” exhibition, exhibits related to the ancient Prussians and the history of Nidzica, photographs of historic Neidenburg, Masurian stove tiles and historical publications, an armoury with replicas of weapons from the period of the Battle of Grunwald, furnishings from traditional Masurian cottages, the Knights' Hall with its Gothic vault and 15th-century polychrome paintings, the viewing room / Gallery under the Beam.
The outer bailey also houses the Tower Gallery, featuring works by Hieronim Skurpski. You can purchase a separate ticket for it or a combined ticket.
Omulove Tip
Arrive a few minutes before the hour. Tours begin on the hour, so if you arrive shortly after one has started, you may have to wait for the next tour.
If you have a little more time, choose the FULL ticket, which also includes the Tower Gallery. After your visit, it is worth taking a stroll through the centre of Nidzica—the castle is a good starting point for a short walk around the city.
